Expedition America came to us after reading “Last Child in the Woods”. After a long discussion about what Rolf, Tayden, and I could do to better influence families and youth in taking a more active role in outdoor exploration and natural play, we came up with our plan. One family, one country, one year, one epic adventure to inspire, motivate, educate, and empower families to get outside and explore. The rest of the story will be told as the journey continues.
Mission:
To bring American families back to nature, by using events our family participates in, to inspire, motivate, educate and empower others to get outside and enjoy America’s beautiful wilderness areas.

Why Does This Matter?:
As children become less connected to nature, there exists a greater likelihood of environmental destruction, in addition to psychological, social, and emotional deficiencies. We need children to grow up in nature so they can become self aware, environmentally conscious, and stewards to for the next generation.

How Can We Make A Difference?:
As we travel throughout the United States, we will be actively meeting, listening to, interacting with and educating families, both on and off trail. Our availability for connection with a wide spectrum of parents, children, and various loved ones, will serve to open channels of communication, which can then be further discussed through media, sponsors, word of mouth and web blogging, for others to ruminate on how it effects their lives. Though our steps may be small, each family impacted can in turn impact another. Collectively we can ALL begin to re-evaluate our position in this world, with each other, with family and with nature.

What Can You Do?:
Get OUTSIDE! Educate yourself, your friends and your children about the importance of nature and what it means to be an environmental steward. Donate to local organizations, such as Cottonwood Institute and G.O.A.L.S., who are focused on educating youth to be more confident in nature. Plant a tree, start your own natural community group or nature hiking group. The list is endless.
